The internet can be a scary place. But also, it can be a very giving place — a place full of community and support. Still, traps lie within its duality. I go back and forth about bringing this up, but it’s very real in my world, and as much as I hate talking about this superficial internet-ish thing, it’s been on my mind a lot recently. Over the past few years, my follower count on social media has consistently decreased, but I love it because I know the universe is clearing out what isn’t aligned.
I’ve come to realize that many people feel the same way I do about these things, and simply by putting it out here, I can help change how we use this whole social media thing. There are many things I’ve learned over the years of being a long-time resident artist online, and I’d love to share them because I know they'll help you, too. I’d actually like to de-influence you on follower count and shift your mindset on social media entirely while you’re here. Let’s goooo…
- When someone else succeeds, that doesn’t mean there’s less space, but it just means it’s possible for you, too.
- Followers, likes, and comments are a drainer when quantity is your basis for success.
- You have to create what is attractive to you and build a genuine community with that, or you will burn out trying to please algorithms, audiences, and trends that come your way.
- The internet is a place for creatives to try new things, share odd ideas, and be fucking weird, NOT follow social media marketing strategies.
- Your power is in the stuff that’s different than everyone else.
- The followers will come. The goal is to share, not to gain followers.
My focus is to share the weird shit and inspire other people to do the same or at least support those who can. You attract what you give, and in the depths of my being, I know that moving as authentically as possible will resonate with those who resonate with me, and that’s what I’m after. Quality over quantity always.
I want to open this internet portal and be filled with inspiration and little reminders from past me. I want genuine conversations and constructive criticism that make us better as a community. Anything that will better our entire being — that's what I want this space to be.
